Senior basketball player Jade Owens took time to chat with sports editor Trey Hunter during the 2018-19 basketball season. Owens finished her high school career, helping lead the district tournament and nearly a second state tournament appearance in four years.
Q: What is your favorite hobby or thing to do outside of basketball and why?
A: My favorite thing to do outside of basketball is go to the lake with my family. I love to wake-board and spend time with my cousins. I also love to read and listen to music.
Q: Have you grown up or lived in Okarche your entire life? What is your favorite part about growing up in a small town and going to school at Okarche?
A: I have lived in Okarche my entire life. I like living in a small town because of the friendly people and the amount of support a small community has to offer. I also love the small school environment that makes it easy to know everyone.
Q: What is your favorite subject in school and why?
A: I really enjoy anatomy. I wish to be a nurse after high school so the human body has always been interesting to me.
Q: Who would you say is your hero? It could be a family member, athlete, etc. and why?
A: My hero is one of my close family friends. He has always inspired me to be the best I can be and has held me accountable. I have always looked up to him and have aspired to have the kind of faith he does.
Q: What is it like playing with your sister Madison? What are your favorite things about it and what’s the chemistry like on the court?
A: I love playing with my sister, Madison. My favorite thing about playing with her is that she is there both on and off the court. I think because of that, it makes us play together better and have chemistry in practice and in games.
Q: What are your plans after high school? Have you chosen what you want to study or if you want to attend college and where? Why?
A: I plan to attend Oklahoma State University of Oklahoma City to study nursing. I have always loved to help people and I also enjoy being around people.
Q: What has been your biggest takeaway or lesson that you’ve learned while playing for coach Jennings and why?
A: The main thing I have taken away from playing for coach Jennings is how to be my best self on and off the court. She has taught to push through when things are hard and stay focused on the what is most important.
Q: What is your favorite moment playing for the basketball team in your career and why?
A: My favorite moment in my basketball career was when the team rode into town for the ‘Honk In’ after the Area finals last year. I loved being with my team and getting to celebrate with them and the community.
