Those with small stands of fresh produce will not need a weekend permit in Okarche.

Local growers of vegetables or fruits will not have to have a license or permit for weekend farmers’ markets on Okarche property.

The Okarche Town Trustees approved exemptions for those who want to have booths or tents for outdoor sales on private, commercial property on weekends.

The ordinance states “Farmers or persons engaged in farming activities, who provide homegrown produce, plants or other consumables, whether fresh, packaged, jarred or canned, for home consumption, to consumers, at a farmers’ market located on commercially or agriculturally-zoned property, whether indoors or outdoors, typically using booths, tables or stands, on weekends only,” are exempt from the permits.

Town clerk Dana Reese said the town receives calls from people wanting to know if they need a produce stand permit of any time as the weather warms for growing outside in spring.

“Each year around this time we have people ask if they can have a little farmer’s market, or pumpkins or something for salsa, this is something for our residents to have an outlet so they do not have to have a one-day permit like we had before,” Reese said.

No license will be required as long as it is not on residential property.
