From Staff Reports
As work continues to reconstruct Oklahoma Avenue, motorists will find traveling in only one direction will be allowed periodically for the next few weeks.
Oklahoma Avenue may be open for eastbound traffic only from First Street to Second Street.
All westbound traffic will need to detour at First Street. The eastbound lane was open from near the stop light at U.S. 81 Wednesday.
Crews are working diligently to finish the job later this fall, said David Adams, project superintendent.
Adams said crews have had a few unforeseen setbacks, such as groundwater found during construction, and there have been rain delays this week.
Also, Oklahoma Avenue is closed to all vehicles with wide loads, 9 feet wide or more, Adams said.
The federally-funded, $1,882,692 project will rebuild the intersection of U.S. 81 and Oklahoma Avenue.
The avenue makeover will be compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act by providing wheelchair ramps, a project spokesman said.
The work that started in May will take about six months to complete, an Oklahoma Department of Transportation spokesman said.
The project is 80% federally funded and 20% locally.
The project is improving the street from U.S. 81 east to the Union Pacific Railroad tracks.
