The record-cold temperatures and snowfall shut down the Okarche Public Schools, as well as Holy Trinity Catholic School, this week for in-person learning.
Classes were expected to resume as roads cleared and weather warmed up by Monday.
The Class A Regional Basketball Tournament was expected to begin Thursday in Okarche High School Gymnasium and continue through Saturday.
Temperatures are expected to rise above the freezing mark by Sunday. Sunday will be mostly sunny with a high of 48 degrees.
Saturday is expected to be sunny with a high of 38 degrees.
Okarche Schools have returned to in-person learning five days a week this semester.
School was canceled Tuesday through Friday.
“Okarche Public Schools will be closed again, Wednesday, February 17th, due to no improvement to streets and temperatures, and another winter storm in the forecast tonight.
Also, due to some families experiencing frozen pipes, power outages, keeping livestock alive and other real-world issues, no virtual learning assignments from teachers will be given for Wednesday. The virtual learning for Wednesday will be parents giving the virtual learning (real life issues) assignments. Just about every subject can be covered using these winter storms, and don’t forget to give a short recess out in the snow!
Stay safe and warm!” Sumrall reported.
Okarche Public Schools were closed, Tuesday, February 16th, and had a virtual learning day, due to snow drifts on roads/streets/school grounds and dangerously low temperatures and wind chill, Sumrall reported.
“Much like last week, virtual learning does not need to consume the entire day. Dividing the day at home with learning, family time and enjoying being a kid should always be an option. Again, we will take the school closing decision one day at a time and will try to have a decision made by 6 p.m. for the following day,“ Sumrall reported.
Elementary class group pictures and 5th/6th grade basketball pictures were scheduled for Feb. 19.
