The 2022 spring semester for Okarche Public schools is underway with students back in class after the Christmas break.

And there are more cases of COVID-19 reported than in recent weeks, said Superintendent Josh Sumrall.

None of the cases are serious, but there have been five students in the grades seventh through 12th who have tested positive.

Another five elementary students in grades pre-kindergarten to sixth grades have tested positive. Most of the students do not have symptoms but have had positive tests.

“Right now, we have five students in the junior high and high,” Sumrall said.

There were weeks at the schools when no cases were reported last year.

“It has been kind of hit and miss. I understand there has been an uptick everywhere right now,” Sumrall said.

The classes have resumed in-person in Okarche, and classes have been in-person since the pandemic started, with only a dozen students having opted for virtual learning last year.

The enrollment for Okarche Public Schools at the beginning of the spring semester was 396 students.

There are 218 students in grades pre-kindergarten to sixth grade enrolled for the spring.

The seventh grade through ninth grade enrollment is 97 students.

There are 81 students in the 10th through the 12th grades.
