Okarche High School winter guard last weekend once again took the top of its division in competition – an accomplishment that has been a regular occurrence in the team’s inaugural season.

The team earned a score of 82.330 in Scholastic Regional A competition at Winter Guard and Percussion of Oklahoma’s March 19 tournament, held at Southmoore High School. Okarche’s score easily surpassed second-place Putnam City and was the third-highest earned by all teams competing Saturday.

Okarche has won its division in all three of its performances this season – an extraordinary accomplishment in light of the fact it is the first year the school has fielded a competitive winter guard team.

The guard’s program is called “Flying,” with music of the same name by Cody Fry. The team’s eight members are the first to fully experience winter guard in a program directed by Russell Harris, who also serves as Okarche’s district band director.

Okarche next heads to its final outing for the season, state WGPO competition in Jenks, scheduled for April 2.
