After an OSU Cowboys football star’s arrest shocked the state and nation, Rep. Mike Dobrinski of House District 59 offered his support through words of encouragement to get back on the right track.
Dobrinski, R-Okeene, who represents people in northern Okarche and northern Piedmont areas of Kingfisher County, as well as parts of Blaine, Dewey, Woodward counties, posted a photo of himself on Facebook Thursday showing a pose with OSU running back Ollie Gordon II and their fingers in the “pistols firing,” mode.
Gordon was arrested in June on a driving under the influence complaint.
Dobrinski said Thursday he met Gordon during the OSU Day at the State Capitol this spring. He posed for the picture taken by a House of Representatives staff photographer.
Dobrinski wrote in a Facebook post, “There is zero chance of today’s media acknowledging any “appropriate” response to this young man’s recent DUI arrest. They will likely accuse him of taking it too lightly and anything his coach does as a consequence will be ruled as “too little” or “too much.”
The post continues, “Less than six months removed from his teenage years, Ollie Gordon can count himself lucky that his decision and actions didn’t result in injury for himself or anyone else. Overcoming the embarrassment and restoring the confidence in friends and supporters will come in time if he commits to learning and growing from this experience.”
“Only by the grace of God and support from family and friends have many of us avoided making this type of mistake ourselves. Let’s support him in prayer for strength to heal and grow from the fear and anxiety I’m sure has been overwhelming from the moment he first saw flashing lights in his rear-view mirror.”
Gordon, the Cowboys’ 20-year-old star running back, was arrested at 2:50 a.m. June 30 during a traffic stop on Interstate 35 in Cleveland County for speeding and swerving. He issued an apology on social media, a day before his first public appearance since the arrest. Cowboys Coach Mike Gundy has said Gordon will not miss any games this fall.
Dobrinski said Thursday, “Coach Gundy has done a tremendous job there (at OSU) in my opinion in building men when they arrive in the program, and that is important.”
