The Lady Warriors warming up for their first season under a new head coach also had to have their heads up.
The Warriors baseball season was underway too on the field adjacent to the softball diamond Monday, Aug. 12. Foul balls from the baseball field can clear the netting and come screaming down onto the softball infield, where heads are turned the other way and eyes are on the larger softballs. It is all part of it, for the Class A school that plays fastpitch softball and baseball in fall. The smoke from the hamburger grill and the loudspeakers playing country and pop tunes meant fall ball was back in Okarche.
New Softball Head Coach Scott Tahah was joined by his wife Brett Tahah, who is assisting the team.
Brett Tahah will also coach girls’ basketball.
No one was hit by a foul ball before the first softball pitch from Lawson Geheb. Her stuff would be enough for the Lady Warriors to get in the win column with a 2-1 victory over Hydro-Eakly.
How baseball did
Brett Carnott connected with a high pitch and blasted a two-run double, driving in Colin Hendrickson and Ethan Roby and the Warriors in the bottom of the first inning were on their way to a 7-3 victory over Canute Monday night.
Luke Hill earned the win on the mound, giving up just three hits and one run. Easton Roby pitched in relief.
The Warriors had 11 hits in the game. Hill had three hits and Ryder Lykins had two hits.
Lykins had an RBI double, and Sam Kroener had an RBI single as the Warriors jumped to an early lead over Canute.
The Warriors hope to return to the state tournament and make a run for the title this fall.
The Warriors next game is 4:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 16 against Calumet at home.
