Due to the winter storm warning issued by the National Weather Service Tuesday for the entire state, Superintendent of Okarche Public Schools Josh Sumrall made the decision to cancel classes for Wednesday.

Sumrall said weather reports Tuesday night called for the possibility of snow and ice by 11 a.m. Wednesday. The weather reports continued to look threatening, and Sumrall said conditions would affect decisions about the rest of the week for classes.

Sleet and ice started to fall in Okarche Wednesday about 10:30 a.m., Sumrall said.

“Wednesday we took a snow day,” Sumrall said. “It was not a virtual day. We will see what comes today and then decide what to do for tomorrow (Thursday),” Sumrall said.

School districts statewide canceled classes for Wednesday due to the weather reports.

Sumrall said he did not want to have to cancel school early on Wednesday after the students had arrived.

Meanwhile, Okarche Schools have been fully staffed and students who had been out with various illnesses had returned this week.

“We will monitor the weather and make a decision for the rest of the week,” Sumrall said.
